Dear colleagues,

Here is an update about the Culture, Power & Politics (CP&P) Section plans for LASA 2009 in Rio de Janeiro (June 11-14), your researchmembership, and CPP website.

1) MARCH 7, 2008: DEADLINE FOR Proposals for CPP (4) special sessions AT LASA 2009

We have extended the deadline for submitting proposals for CPP panels and workshops to MARCH 7, 2008. This will allow the board to evaluate the proposals, decide on the 4 special sessions, and submit them to LASA for the March 28 deadline. We encourage you to check LASA’s call for papers around the theme “Rethinking Inequalities.” When the CPP board decided to adhere to the general theme, we looked into members’ research interests and agreed that they are compatible with the theme. We will update this information (see #2) but, based on the 2003 survey, the subthemes under the general topic of Culture, Power and Politics include: Globalization, culture and power; Regional integration and economic and cultural hegemony; Intellectuals, criticism, knowledge; Human rights, memory, politics; Cultural production and power; Advertising, consumption and new forms of social inequality. Send proposals to: Susana Kaiser: kaisers@usfca.edu (you will receive an automatic response that I am on sabbatical but I do check my mail) with copy to Sylvia Escárcega: sescarce@depaul.edu (Please download the forms from LASA’s website) Contact us if you have any questions or want to discuss some preliminary ideas before March 1. We look forward to receiving your proposals and organizing four great special sessions according to the interests of CPP members.

2) CPP Members’ research interests

The current information is from 2003 and we need to update it. We will appreciate if CPP members email us information about their current research interests. Do it in the format of keywords (as they are currently in the website an indicated in #1 above because we will add them to that list). Please do not send paragraphs. E-mail this information to: Susana Kaiser: kaisers@usfca.edu.

3) Renewing CPP & LASA membership

It is time to renew CPP & LASA’s membership. Please do so at soon as possible. Based on LASA’s latest information our membership decreased to 1/3 of the members. We are aware that this happens during the membership renewal process but we want to secure that the section remains strong and with more than 300 members.

4) Website – New URL

The website has been moved to Villanova University (Thanks to Sylvia Nagy for her work!). The new URL is http://www3.villanova.edu/CPyP/index.html

Please make a note of the change. Updates are “under construction” but some information has been already actualized.

5) YOUR E-MAIL AT THE WEBSITE?

To facilitate networking we would like to include names, affiliations and e-mail addresses on the web page. E-mail addresses will be listed by deleting the @ character and substituting it with "at" so jdoe@gmail.com will become: jdoe at gmail.com. That will prevent automatic web crawlers from collecting your e-mail address. In any case, please let us know if you oppose having member's e-mail addresses on the web page.

Best regards,

CP&P Board

January 21, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

We wish all of you a happy, productive, and peaceful 2008.

Here is an update about the Culture, Power & Politics Section and plans for LASA 2009 in Rio de Janeiro, June 11-14. 2009.

1) Paper Award.

Since there were only four submissions for the CP&P 2007 paper award, the competition has been cancelled. As the call stated: “For this to take place, there has to be a minimum of 5 papers submitted to award one prize and minimum of 10 papers submitted to award a second prize. In case that the 5 minimum is not met the award will be canceled. Likewise, if there is not a minimum of 10 papers submitted, the second prize will be cancelled.” At our business meeting in Montreal we decided to have 1 award for a senior scholar and another for a junior scholar. But we still didn’t receive a minimum of 5 papers in any of those categories. We thank those who submitted their work. If we pursue the publication project discussed in Montreal, we encourage you to submit these papers. We also thank the CP&P members who volunteered to review the submissions. We look forward to improve our communications system so we can secure higher participation of CP&P members for future calls for paper awards.

2) CP&P Membership and Budget

The Section Culture, Power and Politics finished the year 2007 with 306 members. The current balance of the section’s account, after paying Montreal reception’s costs, is $1661.15

3) LASA membership

It is time to renew LASA’s membership. Please make sure to renew your CP&P membership.

4) LASA 2009 – CP&P Sessions

The general theme for LASA 2009 is "Rethinking Inequalities." LASA’s deadline for panels, workshops, papers, & travel grants submissions is March 28, 2008. The Culture, Power & Politics section merits four special sessions for Rio. The board has decided to adhere to the general theme. We believe that the research interests of CP&P members are likely to be compatible with the theme and that we will have better chances of getting some funding for our participants. We invite all members to submit proposals for panels and workshops for these CP&P sessions. In order to comply with LASA’s deadline, the deadline for submissions for CP&P sections is March 1, 2008. (Please download the forms from LASA’s website). This will allow the board to evaluate, select and program our 4 sections and submit them to LASA by March 28. Please send proposals to:

Susana Kaiser: kaisers@usfca.edu (you will receive an automatic response that I am on sabbatical but I do check my mail)

with copy to Sylvia Escárcega: sescarce@depaul.edu

Contact us if you have any questions or want to discuss some preliminary ideas before March 1.

For funding sources, be aware that the Ford-LASA Special Projects program has grants available for up to $12,500.  The proposal deadline is March 15, 2008.  For more information visit http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/specialprojects/fordcurrentcycle.html Please note that our section does not handle this program thus all inquiries and proposals must be sent to the addresses indicated on their website.

5) Website

As discussed in Montreal, we are in the process of transferring the website to  Villanova University. The current site is under construction, but parts of it are functioning already. Please add it to your favorite places:  http://www3.villanova.edu/CPyP/index.html

The webmaster is Silvia Nagy-Zekmi, should you have any comments or suggestions kindly send it to her: silvia.nagyzekmi@villanova.edu
