    The Computational Biomechanics and Solid Mechanics Laboratory investigates mechanical response of biological and engineering structures using finite element modeling. The current focus of the group is to develop a mechanistic understanding of bone fracture using computational modeling with an ultimate goal of addressing skeletal diseases such as osteoporosis.
    Osteoporotic and age-related fractures are a significant public health problem. There has been an increasing emphasis on bone’s hierarchical structure and its influence on the fracture response of bone. At each length scale, different mechanisms are at play that affect bone fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to gain insight into the underlying fracture mechanisms at all length scales to identify components that need to be targeted in clinical treatments.
    The current research projects in our laboratory address the mechanical behavior of the bone at different hierarchical levels using computational modeling. Finite element modeling which is the focus of the laboratory is a powerful tool that has the potential to improve the understanding of fracture processes in bone that cannot be evaluated by experimental studies.
