Villanova Green Roof

Growth and Use

Fig. 1 - Initial Plugs

The plants grown on the green roof (sedums) were dispersed as small plugs of each species over the surface of the roof. There were 10 different types planted.

Fig. 2 - Initial Growth

Much like grass, the sedum plugs began to thrive when summer temperatures started to fall and they spread over the roof's media surface.

Fig. 3 - Snow

The sedums are capable of handling both the extreme heat of the summer and the extreme cold of the winter. Although they do not grow during these harsh conditions, they are able to survive in a somewhat dormant state.

Fig. 4 - Early Spring

During the spring and fall months, the opportunistic sedums grow very quickly.

Fig. 5 - Spreading

This phot was taken only two weeks after Figure 4.

Fig. 6 - Blooming

Many of the sedums even bloom during the spring and early summer and make for a very colorful view out the window.

Fig. 7 - Visitors

The roof does act as a natural habitat for native species of the region. Although many other insects have been spotted on the roof, this praying mantis was one that was harder to miss.
