Applying SCMs in Series: Villanova
Treatment Train
Many sources, including the USEPA, National Resource Council, and
the Pennsylvania BMP manual, recommend
the use of Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs)
in series to form a treatment train.
The concept of using multiple treatment
processes to improve results is a
long-standing remediation strategy in
the water and wastewater fields. As for
stormwater management, the reasons for
using a series of treatments are to
maximize and diversify performance by
increasing the volume retained, improve
outflow quality, increase longevity, and
prevent total system failure. There is
little research to support these
assertions, so Villanova University
designed and constructed a treatment
train which combines four SCMs, to study
the significance of applying multiple
SCMs. The treatment train includes a
vegetated swale, followed by two rain
gardens in series, and lastly, an
infiltration trench. There will be six
monitoring points along the system to
analyze water quality and quantity and
ultimately the effects of applying SCMs
in series.
