PRINT AND PICTURE DEPARTMENT
The Print and Picture Department has 1,000 original photographs of the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. These rare photographs were made by the official photographers of the exposition and include exterior and interior views as well as views of individual exhibits and details thereof. Of unusual quality for photos of the period, they form a unique record of one of the most significant events in American social history.
There is also an equal number of prints, tradesmen's and souvenir cards,
ribbons and other memorabilia in the collection. The prints include
"bird's-eye"views of the Centennial grounds, as well as color lithographs
of individual buildings. The tradesmen's and souvenir cards are small
advertising cards handed out by exhibiting companies from their stalls;
ribbons are woven or embroidered bookmarks bearing portraits of famous
Americans and in some cases pictures of buildings such as Memorial Hall.
Also among these memorabilia is a bronze medal awarded for service.
