July 19-24, 2009 at Villanova University
The Governor's Institute for World Language Educators is a one-week residential institute offered in July on Villanova University’s campus. In the fall of 1998, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge empowered the Pennsylvania Department of Education to begin formulating a plan for the Governor’s Institutes and Academies as professional development opportunities for the state’s teachers from the elementary through high school grade levels. These institutes are offered through partnerships between the Department of Education and institutions of higher learning within the state.
Full scholarships are available to up to 100 qualified teachers by submitting a completed application form. Teachers who complete the program will be awarded 2 graduate credits that contribute to Act 48 requirements.

Greetings from Pam Kolega, Pennsylvania Department of Education World Language Education Advisor:
On behalf of Governor Edward G. Rendell and Pennsylvania Department of Education, I would like to welcome to the Website for the Governor’s Institutes for World Language Educators. The 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 Institutes were extraordinary and rigorous experiences for the participants. Teachers received two graduate credits for completing the weeklong classes and activities relevant to:
Curriculum development using primarily the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning (PA Proposed Academic Standards for World / Classical Languages)
Alignment of standards-based instruction and assessment
Utilization of technology to support and globalize learning
Opportunities for Comparisons of Flex, FLES, and Immersion
Reading and Culture in the Target Language
Immersion in the Target Language
Follow-up activities included completion of a personal portfolio demonstrating innovative standards-based instructional methods that can be applied in classroom lessons or workshops upon the return to school. Ultimately, many of Pennsylvania’s students will now benefit from these lessons that will assist them in getting the education they need to fulfill their dreams and become successful adults. Whether you are a teacher, parent or student, we invite you to use the World Language Institute Website to enhance and expand your second language learning experience.
"World Languages . . . . . . it is not how far you go, but deeply that mines the gold of experience.”
Bon Voyage,
Pamela M. Kolega
