This year, Civil Engineering students enrolled in CEE 4611 will be designing a disinfection system for the water supply. The importance of this project to Amigos is two-fold: 1. We seek to provide them with a low-cost, low-maintenance water disinfection system to improve the health of the children and the volunteers; and 2. An improvement in the water supply will decrease their reliance on bottled water for the volunteers, which will in turn decrease their waste stream. Over Spring break of 2010, 15 undergraduates, 1 graduate student advisor, and two faculty members will be traveling to the orphanage. The mission trips are co-sponsored by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and Campus Ministry, and incorporate all aspects of a service learning experience (preparation, service, reflection, and celebration).
