Information for potential Graduate Research Assistants

The Laboratory for Advanced Thermal and Fluid Systems (LATFS) has openings for new Graduate Assistants almost every year as students graduate or as new funded projects are awarded.  We generally recommend that new students start in the fall semester, although some students do start in the spring semester. If you are interested in potentially joining our research group as a Graduate Research Assistant pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree, the following steps are recommended.

1.    Send your resume with a letter of inquiry to the Lab Director, Prof. Alfonso Ortega (aortega@villanova.edu).  Indicate your status, your graduate date, and your research interests and previous research work.

2.    The Lab Director will assess your resume and letter and will let you know if (a) there are any GA openings, and (b) your background qualifies you for further consideration.  If the Lab Director encourages you to apply to the program, then take the next steps:

3.    Start a formal application to the M.S. program or the Ph.D. program. You can find information on applying at the following:  http://www.villanova.edu/engineering/academics/graduate/

4.    Generally M.S. students who are accepted to work as Graduate Research Assistants in LATFS will be offered a tuition scholarship for their first two academic semester.  After the first two academic semesters are completed successfully, students will normally receive a full Graduate Assistantship consisting of a standard graduate stipend for 12 months, and a tuition scholarship to cover the remaining graduate credits required to complete the degree.

5.    Ph.D. students who are accepted to work as Graduate Research Assistants in LATFS will be offered a 12 month stipend and tuition scholarship for up to 18 tuition credits for their first year.  Upon successful completion of the Ph.D. Qualifying examinations, the Graduate Assistantship will normally be continued for the duration of the Ph.D. program.

6.    Part-Time Ph.D. students who are interested in working on research in LATFS are welcome to apply.  Normally, part-time Ph.D. students are funded by their employer.

Information for potential Undergraduate Research Assistants

Undergraduate students who are interested in working in LATFS as undergraduate research assistants generally work in the lab during the summer break.  If you are interested in working in LATFS as an undergraduate research assistant, contact the Lab Director, Prof. Alfonso Ortega (aortega@villanova.edu) early in the spring semester.  Arrange to meet the Lab Director and bring or send your resume.  There are various ways in which you can receive funding to work in the lab:

1.    You can receive funding directly from the lab as wages-discuss this option with the lab director as funding allocations for summer are made early in spring semester.

2.    You can apply for summer research funding through the Villanova Undergraduate Research Fellows (VURF) program. You can locate information at the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF):

You can find other opportunities for summer research at the CURF website which is regularly updated.
