Toward a Catholic
Understanding of American Multiculturalism

While Catholic social teaching on issues of race and ethnicity is thin
compared to other areas, it does have the potential to speak more
consistently and powerfully on the subject. This is important because
the American understanding of multiculturalism is a weak one, and the
country is in need of new perspectives to open up its dialogue on such
issues. This essay identifies how the Catholic tradition has the
resources to strengthen the American understanding of multiculturalism
by articulating a richer and more compelling moral framework for
addressing racial and ethnic diversity in the United States.
