Description:
This session will provide an introduction to Catholic Social
Thought; the historical, cultural, theological and philosophical contexts that contributed
to the emergence of a series of social encyclicals beginning with Rerum Novarum
(1891) of Pope Leo XIII. In addition, we will examine the theological roots of the common
good and human dignity as enunciated in Gaudium et Spes and Pacem in Terris
and other documents. Objectives:
- To provide an overview of the historical theological and philosophical foundations of Catholic Social Thought.
- To examine the paradigm shift of Vatican II (1963) and its effect on Catholic Social Thought as a living tradition.
- To examine the theological roots of the Common Good
and the communitarian character of human life: justice
and love foundational for the achievement of the Common Good.
