Philadelphia’s AIDS Fund, a non-profit agency created in 1987, is dedicated to distributing funds to over forty organizations in the Philadelphia and nine county region that provide HIV/AIDS related direct services, education, and prevention programs. The AIDS Fund’s primary fundraisers are the AIDS Walk in late October. The AIDS Walk is a one-day, 12-k event that begins and ends in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The opportunities available may be of particular interest to Human Services majors, Communications majors, visual artists, and anyone interested in learning more about the HIV/AIDS community and its issues.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers are needed in a variety of ways that directly relate to the fundraisers. Depending on the fundraiser one assists with, times and responsibilities vary. A person or a group can volunteer for one evening, one day, or over an extended period of time. An extensive list of the opportunities available exists on the AIDS Fund website, as does the volunteer application.

Examples of volunteer opportunities include, but are by no means limited to:

AIDS Walk Preparation (summer through the third Sunday of October)

Canvassing/Tabling – teams of volunteers sell AIDS Walk merchandise and register walkers at various locations prior to the event. Knowledge of the Walk, persistence, and ability to approach people is required. Times to be arranged: evenings and weekends.

Registration – assemble walker kits, address envelopes, and process daily registrations to ensure walkers receive kits in a timely manor. M-R 1-9 p.m.; F 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; weekends vary.

The day of the event also provides ample opportunities for volunteering and helping to make the day a great success.

  AIDS Walk Teams

Teams of volunteers (no limit to the number of people on the team) register before the event, and bring their pledge monies (as much as possible). Ideally, groups sign up at least one month before the day of the Walk. The AIDS Fund is available for informational and supportive campus presentations prior to the event. Fundraising ideas and team meeting suggestions are provided during these presentations.

General Volunteer Opportunities (available throughout the year)

Visuals – design, construct, and/or install window displays. Assist with making signs and other graphic materials to be used the day of the Walk, at BINGO and at other events. Times are to be arranged.

Administrative – assist with large mailings, package materials for distributions, filing, assist with copy and fax jobs. Daytime M-F; evenings M-R.
