Chinatown Learning Center
1034 Spring St. 215.922.4227 The Chinatown Learning Center, created in 1993, maintains a bilingual preschool program for three to six year old children as well as an after school program for first through seventh grade students. The Center services families primarily living in Chinatown, NorthEast Philadelphia, and New Jersey. The majority of children attending the program are Chinese; however, the program is not exclusive and Vietnamese, Caucasian and African-American children have also enrolled. Teachers are bilingual and sensitive to American and Chinese culture. The days are very structured focusing on academic curriculum that incorporates culturally sensitive material as well as activities working to develop the social skills of the children. The after school program focuses primarily upon tutoring and homework. The volunteer opportunities available through the Chinatown Learning Center may be of particular interest to Education majors, Chinese language minors, Sociology majors or anyone interested in learning more about or having exposure to the Chinese culture.
