Delaware County Intermediate Unit Even Start Family
Literacy Program Through the Pennsylvania Department of education, “the Even Start Family Literacy Program trains parents to be the primary teachers of their children by promoting joint reading and language activities. Even Start serves families by providing literacy training for parents that leads to economic self-sufficiency. The program offers opportunities to attain a GED or to participate in [the] English as a Second Language Program. Delaware County parents, with children aged birth- 8 years, who are seeking the GED, ESL, and employment readiness services, are eligible for Even Start’s free program services.” The Upper Darby location offers the opportunity to work with people from many cultures; in a study done spring of 2000, it was discovered that over 150 languages are spoken in the Upper Darby school district. The Chester location works primarily with a Latino population and TANF recipients. Programs take place at the Christ Lutheran Church, 7240 Walnut St. in Upper Darby and the Parry Building, 501 W. 9th St., in Chester. This volunteer opportunity may be of particular interest to Education majors, especially those interested in teaching English as a Second Language, Human Services majors, Spanish majors (Chester) and Peace and Justice minors.
