Delaware County Women Organized Against Rape and Crime Victim Services is a non-profit agency developed in 1974 that serves all of Delaware County with services for victims of crime and rape. DCWAR  provides a 24-hour hotline, as well as accompaniment services to the hospital, police station or court proceedings, and counseling services. Additionally, DCWAR offers educational programs tailored to all areas of the community: risk-education programs for schools; educational programs for community groups; and in-service training for professionals.

IMPORTANT:

This volunteer opportunity is a major commitment, with an interview period (requiring an application and a letter of interest), forty hours of training over six weeks (two nights a week, 7-10 p.m. and one Saturday) in October and March, and a year long minimum commitment required. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and need to have a car. Criminal and Child Abuse clearances are also necessary.

This volunteer opportunity may be of particular interest to psychology students, Human Services majors, nursing students, criminal justice students, Women’s Studies minors, law school students and students considering medical school.

Volunteer Opportunities

After significant training, volunteers are on call approximately twice a month. Shifts are either week-day evening hours from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. or twelve-hour weekend shifts from either 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. During a shift, volunteers are expected to be available for crisis intervention counseling and to accompany victims of rape at the hospital. Volunteers are contacted during their shift by the answering services of DCWAR either by personal pager, personal cell phone or via home telephone. A volunteer then calls the victim, providing needed crisis counseling and potentially accompanying him or her at the hospital. As well, volunteers are utilized to accompany victims at the police station and during court proceedings.

Additionally, volunteers can assist with DCWAR’s educational services, like health fairs.
