The Don Guanella School, established in 1960, is a residential facility for young men and boys up to the age of twenty-one with a primary diagnosis of mental retardation along with other developmental impairments. The school is affiliated with Catholic Social Services, and works with Divine Providence Village, also in Springfield and the Cardinal Kroll Center.  

These volunteer opportunities may be of particular interest to Human Services majors and Special Education majors.

Volunteer Opportunities

Activities with the children are diverse: from arts projects, to softball and basketball, plays, dances, bowling, and other events. Volunteers are expected to be fairly self-sufficient and motivated to work with the kids. 

Both large groups of volunteers and individual volunteers are easily accommodated.  

When: Each month and season the activities (and sometimes the schedules) for the kids fluctuate; contact the Activities Director to find out the best available times. Opportunities exist primarily in the afternoons and evenings on weekdays and also at varied times on weekends. Opportunities exist to volunteer regularly as well as for one-time-only special events.
