HELP Philadelphia
4910 Wyalusing Ave. 215.473.7451 HELP Philadelphia is a non profit agency in West Philadelphia, not far from Villanova. Under the umbrella national organization HELP USA, and along with Philadelphia Health Management Corporation and Childspace Cooperative Development, the agency is devoted to building “self-sufficiency among homeless and low-income families through the acquisition and/or enhancement of key skills necessary for independent living, such as personal self-esteem, parenting, employment, education, and health care”. Eligible families participate in an intensive twelve to eighteen month program that ultimately qualifies them for a Section 8 Certificate, entitling them to permanent affordable housing. The facilities include fifty transitional apartments for homeless families and the Genesis Square Townhouses, a forty-unit low-income housing complex, as well as on-site daycare and a new playground. Volunteer opportunities available through HELP Philadelphia may be of particular interest to Education majors, Human Services majors, Psychology majors and Peace and Justice minors. Contact: Naomi B.
