Migrant Education Philadelphia
2029 S. 8th St. http://www.migranted.state.pa.us/ Migrant Education of Philadelphia is part of the Chester County Migrant Education Program and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The program exists to provide supplemental education through enriching after school programs, weekend events, and summer programs for children of migratory farm workers. Eligible children have parents who work or have worked in seasonal or temporary agricultural employment such as vegetable and fruit harvesting, beef, poultry, and food processing, dairy farming, and lumbering and have moved across school district boundaries within the past three years. Migrant Education Philadelphia, located in South Philadelphia, offers an excellent opportunity for volunteers to work with a variety of cultures in South and North Philadelphia. Currently, MEP serves a majority of Cambodian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian children, as well as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Albanian, and Laotian migrant children. Volunteer opportunities with MEP may be of particular interest to Education majors – especially those interested in ESL, Chinese language students, Human Services majors, Peace and Justice minors, and anyone interested in learning about and working with people from diverse backgrounds, and specifically the migrant population.
