Founded in 1982, the Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness is a not for profit organization dedicated to reducing the number of homeless individuals in Philadelphia through prevention and intervention. PCH works directly with people who are homeless and people who are at high risk of becoming homeless. The agency’s programs include a day center that provides basic necessities like showers, clothing, and telephone access, as well as mail boxes and mentoring from formerly homeless people. Additionally, PCH provides street outreach to currently homeless people, community education, advocacy, research, and referrals that meet the client’s level of need.

Volunteer opportunities through PCH may be of particular interest to Human Services majors, Psychology majors, Sociology majors and Peace and Justice minors.

Volunteer Opportunities

Street Outreach

One of the primary volunteer opportunities for PCH is direct street outreach to homeless people. While walking through pre-determined areas of Philadelphia, volunteers provide information to people on the streets about the services PCH and other organizations provide, like where to find shelter, food, clothing, and showers, as well as case management. The most crucial element of this service is developing relationships with homeless people. Ideally, volunteers come at least once a week in order to create those bonds. Groups and individuals can volunteer for this experience; everyone goes with a group leader to do the outreach.

When: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, & Sunday 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Contact: Elizabeth Caldorola 215.232.1822
