St. Barnabas Mission of Episcopal Community Services, in West Philadelphia, provides emergency shelter, meals and social services to homeless women and their children.” The facility serves up to 115 people; children may range in age from infants to teenagers. “All referrals are made through the City of Philadelphia's Office of Emergency Shelter Services (OESS). The Mission, formerly known at St. Barnabas Mission for the Homeless, merged with ECS in July of 1999. In partnership with public agencies, the professional staff at St. Barnabas Mission of ECS works with families to stabilize their situations and encourage self-sufficiency.”  

Volunteer opportunities through St. Barnabas Mission may be of particular interest to Human Services majors, Education majors, Women’s Studies minors and Peace and Justice minors.

Volunteer Opportunities

St. Barnabas Mission is able to accommodate groups of up to ten volunteers  

After School Homework Club

All of the children at the Shelter can participate in this structured after school program. Volunteers help with one on one attention and homework help.

When: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

Butterfly Program

This day program for children under five is not academically focused; it includes songs, crafts, and playing with children. Approximately ten to fifteen children are involved daily. Volunteers assist the teacher and teacher’s aid.

When: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

IMPORTANT:

St. Barnabas Mission of ECS requires an application and three references,
as well as criminal record checks and child abuse clearances.
