Saint John’s Hospice was created in 1963 in order to minister to the needs of the Center City homeless community; it works to help individuals, “break the cycle of homelessness and recover from life on the streets”.  Part of Catholic Social Services, St. John’s offers a day program, a residential program, as well as the Good Shepherd residential program for medically fragile men. St. John’s provides food, clothing, shelter, referrals and other social services to homeless men in need.

Volunteer opportunities may be of particular interest to Human Services majors, Psychology majors, Sociology majors and Peace and Justice minors.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer responsibilities vary and initiative is expected. Assistance can be used in many areas: helping in the clothing room (9-11 a.m.), assisting with mail, assisting during meal times, and even in offering talents, like teaching music…

When: Flexible; approximately once a week for two to three hours during the weekday. Volunteers are expected to simply keep the schedule that is determined.
