St. Philips Methodist Church
“F” and Tioga Streets 215.634.5222 Located in a largely immigrant, poor section of Kensington, St. Phillips Methodist Church runs an after school program for approximately sixty-five first through fourth grade children. The program developed in order to, “provide a safe haven for the children”. St. Phillip’s population is diverse; approximately 50% of the children are of Asian heritage, 20% are African-American, 20% are Latino, and 10% are Anglo. About half of the students come from families where English is not spoken as the first language; however, all students speak English. The program is structured with homework help, group activities, a snack, and play. The volunteering opportunities available through St. Phillip’s Methodist Church may be of particular interest to Education majors, Sociology majors, and Peace and Justice minors. Contact: Nancy Wolfe, Monday through Friday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Revwolfe@aol.com Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteers are expected to maintain a schedule of one day per week for at least
one semester. As well, volunteers must contact the program in advance if unable
to attend one scheduled day.
