Founded
in 1990, Urban Bridges at St. Gabriel’s “[provides] nurturing
educational opportunities for people of all ages in the creative arts, computer
technology and literacy”. Urban Bridges is very conscious about building
a partnership with service-learning college students, providing “the optimum
educational experiences - both for the college student and for [the Urban
Bridges] participants. All service-learning projects are supervised by an
Urban Bridge’s staff member and [are] closely monitored by Program Coordinators.
Orientation and training [are] provided prior to placement”. Programs exist to
work with youth and adults through literacy, the arts, and technology.
Volunteer opportunities may be of particular interest
to Education majors, Human Services majors, Computer Science majors, artists,
and actors.

Volunteer Opportunities
After School Youth Programs

On-site Arts
and Academics Academy – assist staff in daily program activities for youth in
first through eighth grade involving the arts, technology, and educational
enrichment. Urban Bridges can accommodate up to fifteen volunteers per
day in the on-site after school youth programs.
When:
Monday through Friday, 3
p.m. to 6 p.m.

Off-site
Youth Literacy Programs – tutor and mentor academically at-risk youth in
fourth through ninth grades in special after school sessions. Urban Bridges
can accommodate ten to twenty volunteers per day at one site.
When:
Monday through Thursday, 3
p.m. to 6 p.m.

Artist
Residency – work with professional visual and performing artists in Urban
Bridge’s off-site after school programs. Due the specialization of the
program, Urban Bridges can only accommodate up to two volunteers per
day.
When:
Monday through Thursday 3
p.m. to 5 p.m.
Technology Opportunities
Opportunities exist to work with both youth and adults in the Urban Bridges
technology centers in order to assist the learners with basic software and
internet skills. Individuals and groups as large as five volunteers can be
accommodated.
When: Monday
through Friday afternoons and evenings, beginning at 3 p.m. and closing at 9
p.m. Shifts can be determined based on volunteer availability and student
need.
Adult Literacy and GED Programs
Adult
tutoring programs available through Urban Bridges include teaching ESL,
tutoring basic math, pre-GED tutoring, as well as teaching basic computer
skills.
When: Monday
through Thursday - afternoons 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; evenings 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Organizational Opportunities
Assist
with clerical work, mailings, data entry, Internet research and fund raising.
When: Monday
through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours are flexible according to volunteer
availability, though a set schedule will be determined.
